What nail surgery actually involves

The procedure is a partial nail avulsion: the toe is numbed completely with local anaesthetic, the problem edge of nail is removed (not usually the whole nail), and the nail matrix under that strip is treated with phenol so it doesn't grow back. The procedure itself takes around 20 minutes, the appointment around 45 to 60 with the anaesthetic and dressing. You wear a roomy shoe home and most people are back to work or school the next day.

When surgery is the right call, and when it isn't

One ingrown toenail after a bad cut or tight shoes usually just needs conservative treatment. But if the same toe has been ingrown two or three times, or you're trapped in a cycle of infections and antibiotics, removing the problem edge permanently is quicker, cheaper and kinder than treating it again every few months. Aaron assesses every toe first and is straight with you about which camp you're in; surgery is never the default.

Recovery, honestly described

The toe is usually comfortable within a couple of days, and because the toe is numbed with local anaesthetic you shouldn't feel the procedure itself. You'll keep the toe dressed and dry for the first phase of healing, avoid swimming and contact sport for a few weeks, and come back for a review so we know it's healing properly. Full skin healing typically takes four to six weeks. Does toenail removal hurt?

The only genuinely uncomfortable part is the anaesthetic injection, which stings for a few seconds. After that the toe is completely numb and you feel pressure, not pain. Discomfort afterwards is usually mild and settles within a day or two.

How much does nail surgery cost?

Will the nail grow back?

The removed strip is treated with phenol specifically so it doesn't. Regrowth rates after phenolisation are low, and if a spike ever does regrow it can be dealt with. The rest of the nail grows normally and usually looks close to normal once healed.

How soon can I drive, work and exercise?

Most people drive and return to desk work the next day. Keep the toe dry and dressed as advised; running, swimming and contact sport wait a few weeks until the toe has healed. We give you exact timescales at your appointment.

Can I have both big toes done at once?

Yes, if both need it — many patients prefer one recovery period to two. Aaron will advise whether that's sensible in your case.
